Threshold of Creation
I believe that ideas are formless, shapeless objects floating in the ether. They do not come from inside ourselves, but rather use us as a conduit to find themselves realized in the physical world. I consider creativity the act of bringing these ideas into being. I believe creativity is a basic human skill that is not reliant on any specific skill set or resume bullet.
By classifying yourself a practitioner of one specific creative medium or another, you are limiting the possibilities for various inspiration to visit. You are only willing to accept the idea if it lines up with your current focus. Some ideas are films, but some ideas are photos, some ideas are novels, some ideas are businesses. I believe the trick is to be open and ready for anything.
I think a mistake creative individuals often make is that they had an idea in the past so they make the specific medium the idea chose to present itself their focus forever. You are creative and you had a business idea so you go to school for business. However, that business idea may have left a long time ago because you were busy learning the craft instead of realizing the idea.
I believe the solution is to be open for anything. Don’t worry so much about the technical elements; they can be learned. Figure it out along the way; inspiration powers motivation. Once you realize how low the threshold is before you can start bringing ideas into being, I believe you are rewarded from this insight by an endless stream of ideas and inspiration, begging to be brought into the physical world.
